We are all born naked and it has been this way forever. Our Mother's first gift to us is a blanket to cover our bodies. And then we get some clothes. Mommy and Daddy teach us to hold a bottle and then a spoon and then a fork and from then on we are always looking to hold something like a crayon or a pencil or a tool. On the first day of school we don't know what we're going to need but we come prepared anyway with a little book bag or a lunch box so that we are carrying something, like our ancient ancestors who ventured out from the caves with a spear in hand and came back with a kill. We see no naked people walking down the street like grown-up babies. All the grown-up babies are carrying shopping bags and cell phones and car keys and iPods and sacks full of food and things like that. Rarely do you see a grown-up baby just like they were born carrying nothing in, nothing through, and nothing out. Michael Domino. March 4, 2007 |
