A Thousand Sparrows
By Michael Domino
Three Autumn trees on Main Street,
so close together their leaves are touching.
The middle tree is alive with a thousand chirping sparrows.
I stop and look up into main tree—
those little birds are busy, busy, busy.
Teams of sparrows hop from branch to branch,
shaking the tree with their life.
Golden leaves are snowing down as the flock arranges itself
with some order only a thousand sparrows in one tree could figure.
I walk from the living, shaking tree in between
the two still empty trees and think,
Isn't life interesting and strange and wonderful.
