A Mill by age twenty-seven,
Drove in Mercedes SL heaven
With sixteen-ounce Bud’s from 7-11.
Kids in best private schools.
Built-in heated swimming pools.
Big shot playing by the rules.
Private housekeeper.
Weekend late-sleeper.
Secret heart-weeper.
Wearing clothes from posh Polo.
White-water rapids of cash flow.
Dangerous bars drinking solo.
Flew on the Concord from JFK
To Europe so fast to live the same day;
Saw no sights, just worked all the way.
Manhattan pied-a-terre,
Decorations scattered everywhere,
Alone with the Chrysler Building to stare.
Much of this still remains,
But my desires are now tame—
A lion with a shaved-off mane.
My home, a humble apartment;
I don’t own it, I just rent—
A simple life compared to where I went
If I tell myself that I need more,
I leave from my one and only door
And find all I need at the nearest dollar store.
So please come to visit me.
I’d like you very much to see
How happy things costing a dollar have made me.
