City of People
Manhattan, NY
January 21, 2008

Do you see those tall buildings and
bridges strung with lights glimmering like pearls
draped across an elegant woman's
neck and breasts?

Luring you into hidden tunnels dug so deep and
dark, while you wait with excited anticipation to
emerge into the enchanted pathway of all your dreams,
aspirations, expectations, and imaginations.

Come closer and closer and closer still, until
you get so close that you can't wrap your arms around it
any longer because now you are inside looking out and
there are no bearings, no beacons; you just, you must find
your
own way and make it all seem real… just to you… just for
yourself.

And the closer you get to the man-made lures that baited you
to the shiny diamond hook, it all evaporates into a haze, a
maze,
and it all crumples small into tiny sand particles, the
components of
the city, and all that is left are the people standing tall with
words to share and bare.

Then you see with the most clarity and say, "Thank you," to
this city of multitudes, of sand grains, that brings you to life.

Thank you, mighty city, for putting these people
so close to me so that I can see their minds
behind closed doors.
